Below are some excerpts taken from “Mind Manners in Every Interview,” written by Amy Winter in the Sacramento Bee on 5/25/08 reporting on a survey by Vault.com (interviewed 104 managers and 1647 emloyees)
- 59% of hiring managers said job seekers’ manners have gone downhill in recent years
- 43% said job seekers used profanity during interviews
- 19% reported candidates brought a child along
- 12% left early
- 5% took along bathroom break
- most commmon improper behavior is wearing the wrong clothes – 87% said job seekers lack professionalism in their attire
- 68% of hiring managers instantly disqualify a candidate for picking up a phone during an interview (that seems like common sense to me, but apparently it happens).
Arrive on time for interview.
12% managers will no longer consider candidates if they are five minutes late
19% if 10 minutes late
30% if 15 minutes late
If being late is unavoidable (flat tire, accident, etc.), then call and explain your situation. Often times a reasonable explanation for being late
Ask questions about the position as 82% of managers consider it extremely important for candidates to arrive prepared with questions.
Contact after an interview:
71% of job-seekers said they have been denied a position without ever hearing back from the employer
11% of hiring managers admit to never contacting candidates
