When planning for this fair, we wanted the environmental fair to be a little smaller and more intimate for students to meet the employers. I don’t know about you, but I like the idea of meeting with 50 employers (more or less) instead of 200. Don’t worry, the career fair in mid-November will be in the Pavilion, for sure.

Environmental? I don’t think that’s me…

What do you have against the environment, punk!? (haha) There’s nothing wrong with stepping outside of your comfort zone for a little bit. Career fairs help students with finding internships and jobs or just assist with networking in general. Make sure to check out that list of employers that are coming (You can click right here). A number of companies are recruiting all majors. Yes, you read that correctly – all majors. If the light bulb in your head didn’t go off already, I don’t know what else to do. A number of these companies have had great job postings on Aggie Job Link, and you should definitely stop by their table and check them out.

Dear students,

Welcome back! I know, I’m a little late, especially since it’s been about a month since school started! Blame it on the senioritis.  You’re working hard and we are, too. If you haven’t noticed, we’ve changed things around a bit here at the ICC. Just a heads-up:

- Fewer Student Advisors and Coordinators may be around, but check out our resources online! We have our webshops which are a great resource on learning job skills, networking, and resume writing! The best part? It’s available 24/7, so you can tab between a webshop and Facebook (don’t lie, you know you do that too.) Also, you can access the online version of our Career Resource Manual whenever you’d like – it’s right here (or check out the link to the right under “Useful Sites.”

Dear Students,

The start of Fall Quarter is fast approaching, and the new school year will usher in new changes, opportunities, and hopes, right? Um, kinda.

If you haven’t heard the news, California’s budget cut situation isn’t looking too good right now. Maybe you haven’t felt its effects, but I think you will soon. I know I have : (

I just want to inform all of you that the overall theme of this blog will be changing in the following weeks. I’ll still try to be helpful & hopeful as always, but I will have to be a little blunt as well. Things can’t stay sugar-coated forever; otherwise, you might get diabetes.

Applying for jobs just gets harder and harder.

When I applied for student advisor, I learned that preparing a cover letter was actually a requirement. I had applied for other jobs with just my resume, but for the first time I had to submit a cover letter? After taking AMS98 (It may also be AMS95 during the school year), which is the “Career Discovery” course offered through the ICC, I was introduced to a number of resources and I remembered that I still had the Career Resource Manual from my Freshmen year. The Career Resource Manual gave me a great starting foundation on how to write a cover letter (and maybe that’s how I got the job! Haha).

When I applied for my HBA internship at Apple, I learned that up to five individuals may be interviewing me. Gulp. The last time I had a panel interview was a few months prior for the student advisor position, and that was pretty nerve-racking. How did I prepare for it? I grabbed that handy-dandy Career Resource Manual and looked over that list of frequently-asked interview questions, of course. I didn’t memorize answers (which you should never do), but I practiced in front the mirror imagining that I was being asked those questions. Reviewing the suggested list of questions that I should ask at the end of the interview doesn’t hurt either.

I recently applied at a small company back here in the Bay Area as an Administrative Assistant. To date, the hiring process was one of the most intensive yet (and I thought the ICC & Apple were hard!), intensive in terms of documentation: cover letter, updated resume (by the way, I learned that it really helps if you tailor your resume for each job you apply for. Yes, it takes me an hour and a half to produce a presentable cover letter and resume, but each follow-up from a company makes it worth it), follow-up email, list of references, and acceptance letter. Where did I learn how to create each one of those documents and still seem professional and knowledgeable about all this? You know, my BFF (see title of entry if you’re still stumped).

If you’re still not sure about what the Career Resource Manual is, let me break it down: it is an AMAZING document that has helped me throughout my time here at UC Davis. From reviewing their career timeline and trying to apply it to my life, to resume and cover letter examples, helpful links to research employers and jobs, preparing for the career fair, etc. Stop by the ICC (located on the 2nd & 3rd floor of South Hall) to get your hard copy, or check out the PDF under this blog’s list of “Useful Sites”).

5. We’re the only UC with a(n) (amazing!) Textiles & Clothing department

4. There are two tracks: the Chemist option or the Economics & Marketing option. A majority of students take the second track, but both options lead toward a Bachelor of Science. The TXC major is ultimately gearing students toward a business degree: Our classes consist of core TXC classes (i.e. Principles of Fashion Marketing or Textile Apparel Industry), a few Managerial Economics classes (yes, we take ARE100A, ARE100B, and ARE136) and science classes (MAT16A, STA103, CHE10 and PHY10 just to name a few)

3. The Student Fashion Association is led by a number of hard-working TXC majors and do their best to bring glamour to UC Davis through events such Fashion Week and the Trashion show

2. Our blogs. We currently have three very important blogs, and growing! First, there is the TXC Internship blog and the TXC Career blog. That’s right, we have one blog devoted to internship listings in the positions of merchandising, public relations, design, apparel, photography, etc and another blog is devoted to career opportunities (i.e. product manager, international channel manager, fabric quality analyst, etc). It definitely helps when you’re on the job search hunt : D Also, we have an online TXC newsletter located at materialmatters.blogspot.com. A number of TXC majors work on it, such as fellow Aggie Luis Legaspi, but other TXC students are encouraged to help out.

1. Joan Chandler – talk about an amazing advisor! You’ll just have to meet her in person to see for yourself how much of an invaluable and integral part she is of the TXC department.

I can personally attest to the great satisfaction of being in a major where my advisor knows my name, I know the instructors & professors, and I’m learning from different classes and fields that ultimately make up the TXC major. Interested in pursuing the major or minor? Stop by Everson 129 and talk to Joan; she loves speaking with interested students!

Feeling like this guy lately? Whether you’re a graduating senior or an undergrad desperately seeking a part-time job or internship, know that you’re not alone.

Here’s some things to remember while on the job search:

- Anxiety building up? Check out ” Fear to Career: How to manage your job search stress” today at 1pm in 114 South Hall. Dr. Carlos Canales and Lisa Sanders will give some great insight as how the economy, job market, family expectations, and graduation may be hindering you in the process

- Check Aggie Job Link 4570x a day? (If you don’t have an Aggie Job Link account, sign up here) Broaden your search; try not to be specific. Also, try to look just by different keywords (i.e. searching under “marketing” or “finance” or just “intern.”) or change the industry

- Apply for work at a temp agency! “Whoa Kris,” you might think, “a temp agency?” Well, whatever pre-conceived notions you have you should just put aside now.  If you’re not getting hired, why rule this option out? Actually, temp agencies are a pretty good deal – you’ll get to develop your computer or administrative abilities and use those transferable skills toward a future job or internship. It sounds a lot more legit that you’ve developed those computer skills while working with a company as oppose to… typing up your latest 5-page paper. Check out local temp agencies here.
